Organization’s Mission and Goals

City Year was founded in 1988 on the belief that young people can change the world. The organization unites 17-24 year olds of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. City Year’s diverse young leaders make a difference in the lives of children by working to close the achievement gap and turn around low performing schools in 23 U.S. locations and in London and South Africa. This year, more than 2,000 City Year corps members are serving on diverse teams in schools and communities. City Year received more than 8,400 applications for 1,750 U.S. corps member positions in the 2010-11 program year....

Responsibilities

Program Manager Management:

Manage and coach program managers to meet their service performance requirements and to provide leadership development of their corps members....

Service Impact & Evaluation

  • Tracks Program Manager’s data deliverables and reports teams' progress, observations and general service impact information to Service Director.
  • Supports Service Director and Program Managers in gathering data from schools.
  • Regularly observes classroom and out-of-school activities.
  • Supports Program Manager in placing corps members in classroom.

Relationship Management:

Develop, strengthen and maintain key relationships with school officials, community leaders and other external stakeholders to achieve impact and serve as supervisory contact....

Corps Member Management, Training & Development:

Oversee the creation and implementation of the corps member experience. This 10 month long journey of learning, development and reflection builds a corps members’ civic capacity and civic identity and fosters opportunities for member development....

School Based Trainings:

Cultivate and implement all school-based trainings (anything regarding direct service in the schools) to ensure the corps makes the most powerful impact in the schools we serve....

Organizational Initiatives & Site Support:

Support site-wide events and initiatives to ensure the success of all department goals....

Qualifications

  • BA/BS required, or extensive City Year experience; education sector experience a plus.
  • Commitment to and experience with community service, national service and/or the development of young people as leaders.
  • Communication: understands audience to deliver, convincing and well organized presentations; facilitates effectively to move initiatives forward; uses brand to convey mission and goals; coaches others.
  • Team Leadership: successfully leads diverse teams of individuals to achieve results; sets vision and appropriately delegates tasks; holds people accountable.
  • Talent Development: builds an inclusive succession plan for key positions; maintains intellectual capital; shares leadership opportunities; supports talent development and staffing organization-wide.
  • Decision Making Judgment: understands and manages organizational decision-making, including integration across network/departments; effectively communicates, manages, owns & champions decisions being implemented.
  • Strategic Thinking and Planning: develops and translates strategies into objectives, action plans and measurements, that build the capacity of the site/department.
  • External Relations: takes initiative in establishing new partnerships and external opportunities; ability to secure commitments to organization.
  • AmeriCorps/City Year alumni are encouraged to apply
  • Proficiency in Spanish language a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to work with and inspire a diverse team of young adults in educational, community service, or youth development organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Must have willingness to work under pressure and short notice deadlines.
  • Ability to work with and interact with multiple, diverse stakeholders.
  • Willingness to wear City Year uniform on a regular basis and uphold and enforce City Year standards.
  • City Year staff members are expected to think outside of their own job description at all times to help further the National Service Movement.
